On the day of birth, we were in Manti all day getting sealed in the temple there. Almost no movement all day — until we were kneeling to be sealed as a family for the first time. Then BIG contractions. My water broke as I was the last one changing. We went to Mt. Pleasant for a baby check, and I opted to go home after two hours. Melissa followed. It had already been a huge day for her with clinicals.
We got home and Melissa arrived shortly after. I was feeling alone and fearful — my husband (very smart and attentive) and my best friend (a mom of four who had traveled hours with her kids to support me, since I have no family around) were sorting out sleeping arrangements for the kids, because they had no idea how to help. But then, amidst the chaos, suddenly Melissa was there and all was right in the world. Peace returned, and because of her presence and knowledge to alleviate pain, minutes later my daughter was born — two minutes before midnight.
I question to this day if I would have made it through without Melissa. I can promise my pregnancy and birth would have been an entirely different story — very likely one of stress and frustration — without her through the process. Despite an amazing husband and best friend wanting to help, there's simply no replacement for the power of knowledge and know-how. I know Melissa had my back, and I knew I could trust her completely. Even if things had gone south, I know she would have known what to do and when to transport if necessary. She is also an EMT.
I could go on all day. I could not shorten this, hard as I tried.
