Her Journey to Midwifery
Melissa began her nursing career at the College of Eastern Utah (CEU) School of Nursing. Her first obstetrics rotation was all it took — she fell in love with the field. She went on to work as an OB nurse and then as an AEMT while raising her family, before returning to school to pursue a degree in midwifery.
Drawing on her own birth experiences, Melissa wanted to offer women in Castle Country another option for giving birth, and she entered midwifery training with the goal of one day opening a birth center. Along the way she trained alongside many midwives in a variety of settings, carrying something from each into her own practice.
Her favorite was the birth center and home birth practice where she completed her training, under a midwife with forty years of experience. That mentorship gave Melissa a deep well of knowledge to draw from — and sparked a passion for home birth that completed her vision of offering community birth options to the women of Castle Country.
Most births need to be supported, not controlled. Every woman deserves to give birth in an environment where she is comfortable, empowered to choose, and supported.
Our Philosophy
Gentle Birth is founded on the belief that, for the vast majority of women, childbirth is a normal physiologic process — one that changes the constellation of a family and deserves the utmost care and support.
When a woman is the central focus of her care — when her health is promoted, she feels safe in her birth environment, she is respected as a unique individual, and her natural efforts to birth are supported — her childbirth experience can unfold with the best possible outcome.
Gentle Birth strives to
Instill confidence in women and support their own efforts to give birth.
Offer a true alternative of health promotion to women and their families — during the childbearing years and throughout a lifetime.
Encourage women to take responsibility for their health by educating them to be true participants in their care.
Provide an environment that is conducive to family-centered care.
Offer an environment of respect, support, and privacy for laboring women and their families.
Respect and encourage expressions of cultural diversity.
Provide safe care to low-risk women through pregnancy, labor and birth, the postpartum period, and beyond.
